🔑Key Points
The religion and belief system of the Indus Valley people have received considerable attention, with many writers concerned with identifying precursors to the religious practices and deities of much later Indian religions.
Due to the lack of enough of evidence, which is open to varying interpretations, and the fact that the Indus script remains undeciphered, the conclusions are partly speculative and many are largely based on a retrospective view from a much later Hindu perspective.
A common class of terracotta statuettes have been identified as figurines of a "mother goddess" (and goddess of fertility, by extension) by a spectrum of scholars.
In view of the large number of figurines found in the Indus valley, some scholars believe that the Harappan people worshipped a Mother Goddess symbolizing fertility, a common practice among rural Hindus till today.
